چکیده
Introduction: Functional brain imaging involves the use of different imaging modalities that provide “on-line” information about the brain activity during the performance of task or at rest. There are several available imaging modalities such as quantitative electro-encephalogram (QEEG), which detects electrophysiological changes, Positron Emission Tomography (PET), which detects glucose and water metabolism and functional Magnetic Resonance Image (fMRI), which detects hemodynamic changes during activities and at rest. In this paper we will summarize the evidence for using fMRI in subjects with pre-clinical and clinical dementia. Functional MRI technique identifies brain activation/deactivation based on imaging of the endogenous blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast signal. The BOLD signal is the product of the integrated synaptic activity of neurons via MRI signal changes due to hemodynamic changes, mainly change in oxyhemoglobin/deoxyhemoglobin ratio. There are mainly two types of studies using fMRI in pre-clinical and clinical dementia: 1Functional activation studies: Increased BOLD signal is usually interpreted as “activation” of the underlying brain areas during a task and negative BOLD response as “deactivation”, which is thought to represent decreases in neuronal activity below baseline levels of activity. Typically, fMRI experiments compare the MRI signal during one cognitive condition to a control condition like viewing familiar objects or to a passive baseline condition like visual fixation. (1-2-) 2Functional connectivity studies (fc-MRI). These techniques examine the correlation between the intrinsic oscillations or time courses of different brain regions (3-).

The Benefits and implementations of Diffusion tensor imaging and Neural Fiber Tractography in Brain Surgery
Background and Aim: The methods for detecting brain activation with fMRI, MRI provides a way to measure the anatomical connections which enable lightning-fast communication among neurons that specialize in different kinds of brain functions. Diffusion tensor imaging is able to measure the direction of bundles of the axonal fibers which are all aligned. Besides mapping white matter fiber tracts,...

OBJECTIVE To determine what proportion of patients with dementia seen by family physicians are assessed and managed according to the recommendations of the Canadian Consensus Conference on Dementia (CCCD). DESIGN Retrospective medical record review. SETTING Outpatient services in university-affiliated family practice clinics in Calgary, Alta; Ottawa, Ont; and Toronto, Ont. PARTICIPANTS On...
متن کاملRecommendations of the Canadian Consensus Conference on Dementia--dissemination, implementation, and evaluation of impact.
BACKGROUND Subsequent to the development of consensus statements on a clinical topic, it is vital to establish a plan for dissemination, implementation and evaluation of impact. Consensus statements can be used for both guiding continuing medical education (CME) and producing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs). Insufficient attention to dissemination can lead to a failure to change physician b...
متن کاملMini-mental status examination mapping to the corresponding brain areas in dementia
The Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE) is a brief screening instrument frequently used to evaluate and monitor patients with different types of dementia. Each cognitive domain evaluated with MMSE has corresponding brain areas that responsible for that function. The purpose of this study was to attempt better understanding of relations between cognitive function and brain regions responsible ...
متن کاملBrain Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography Scan (SPECT) and Functional MRI in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Patients with Cognitive Dysfunction: A Systematic Review
Objective(s): Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Cognitive dysfunction is one of the manifestations that could present prior to the emergence of any other neuropsychiatric involvements in SLE. Cognitive dysfunction is a subtle condition occurring with ahigh frequency. However, there is no data on the correlation of cognitive...
